Energy renovation of the University of Pannonia buildings (KEHOP-5.2.2-16-2023-00169)

Project ID: KEHOP-5.2.2-16-2023-00169

Project description:

In April 2023, our University won HUF 975,000,000 in the KEHOP-5.2.2 "Priority building energy improvements in public buildings" tender, which is part of the complex investment, during which the buildings of Veszprém, Egyetem u. 10. will be renewed from an energy point of view.

In the light of the energy crisis and shortage in the summer of 2022 and the current and expected significant price increases of energy carriers, the University of Pannonia examined the possibility of developing an economically sustainable heat pump system using electricity instead of gas boilers. Based on the results of the study, the heat pump system is technically feasible and significantly more economical to maintain and operate than the previous system.

The heat pump upgrade concerns buildings I, A, Assembly hall, B study, C, D, J building and the central boiler house.

The building complex will be equipped with a new heat pump system for central heating, artificial ventilation and domestic hot water production.  The heat pump block will consist of 6 units of approximately 340 kW each, based on preliminary calculations, operating at a heat input of 21/16 °C. The outdoor units and piping will be charged with a glycol medium, which will be decoupled from the heating system by heat exchangers located in the boiler room. In this primary circuit, the necessary building services fittings and equipment are installed. From the heat exchangers, the heat produced is transported by 20/15 °C water through insulated piping to the heat exchangers in the buildings concerned, where it is produced by a water-to-water heat pump with the appropriate capacity per building. The sub-heat centres will also be equipped with building services shut-off, cut-off, control and safety fittings for each water-to-water heat pump.

The investment activities have started, and after the trial operation, this efficient, economical and renewable energy source will serve the energy needs of the University of Pannonia in the 2023 heating season.
