Development of multi-parameter testing system to analyses the environmental impacts of microplastics (2020-1.1.2-PIACI-KFI-2021-00239)
Project ID: 2020-1.1.2-PIACI-KFI-2021-00239
Project description:
The project aims to develop innovative methods in the following areas:
1. For examination of microplastic contamination of indoor and workplace air:
- development of a sampling and analytical method for the identification and characterization of microplastic-particle;
- determination of the concentration and size distribution of microplastic-particles emitted from specific activities with using real-time measurement equipment;
- analysis and evaluation of related microbiological and chemical risks.
2. Characterization of airborne microplastic-particulates that cause a risk to human health:
- identification and characterization of particles released from burning of illegal plastic waste;
- learn about the binding capacity and concentrating effect of microplastic particles with model experiments.
3. To investigate the microbiological mediating effect of airborne microparticles:
- study of viruses colonizing on microplastic particles' surface and biofilm-forming bacterial communities, with particular focus on pathogenic microorganisms.
4. The characterization of waterborne micro-particles:
- investigation of the concentrating effect of harmful substances through model experiments;
- experimental method development to study the complex effects between microplastics and chemical and biological agents;
- testing the combined effect in a prokaryotic and in a fish model system based on ecotoxicological criteria.
5. Toxicological evaluation of the effects of microplastics in wastewater treatment processes:
- assessment of the environmental risk of microplastic particles by microbiological and ecotoxicological studies;
- the development of a multi-parameter testing system for microplastics in water and wastewater to assess potential risks.
