Establishment of a Waste Management Centre of Competence at the University of Pannonia (2022-1.1.1-KK-2022-00002)
Project ID: 2022-1.1.1-KK-2022-00002
Project description:
The University of Pannonia and its consortium partner, the Pannon Novum West-Transdanubian Regional Innovation Non-profit Ltd. awarded 2 300 000 000 Ft financed from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund. The project entitled „Establishment of a Waste Management Centre of Competence at the University of Pannonia” started on the 1st of March, 2023 aim is to develop a complex waste management concept and vision that can solve the waste management challenges of the coming years with innovative, scientifically supported solutions. This project aims to respond to the challenges of the Hungarian and to the EU waste management system. In line with the EU Landfill Directive, Member States must reduce the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill to 10% or less as opposed to the current rate of 50 percent of the total amount of municipal waste generated by 2035. To achieve this goal, legal regulations is being drafted but the technological implementation is yet to be developed. The main focus of the R&D activities is on municipal waste of biological origin, which is currently predominantly disposed of in mixed municipal waste and from there directly to landfill in the form of the so-called biological fraction. To change this a legislation which requiring separate collection of kitchen waste is expected to be introduced later this year. The aim of this project is to find answers to specific collection solutions, processing technologies or complex, economic recovery of specific waste streams before or in parallel with the introduction of legislative changes.
The main areas and the research sub-programmes of the project are:
I. Developing sorting technology:
Analysis of a sample region from a waste management point of view, inspection of a pilot sorting plant, Development of a modular simulator and camera system.
II. Biological utilization: Biological waste utilization with composting and by fermentation, Developing compost certification, Crop production examinations, Testing the purification and usability of leachate and washing water.
III. Chemical and mechanical utilization: Provision of secondary raw materials, Production and purification of pyrolysis oil, Gasification, Transformation of pyrolysis oil by metathesis, Mechanical utilization
IV. Public awareness-raising: Establishment of an Education Center, establishment of a Waste management MSc specialization, Attitude formation regarding selective waste collection, Analysis of the waste management network
V. Establishing a circular ecosystem.
The newly established Waste Management Centre of Competence is a partner project organization of the Circular Economy Center of Competence, which together form the Sustainability Center of Competence. The goal of the organizational unit is to build on the already existing, stable foundations and further significant R&D infrastructure capacity and competence development at the University in order to effectively move towards sustainability and a circular economy as soon as possible.
