Development and synergy testing of innovative electrochemical energy storage with a solar power plant and a hydrogen production plant (2021-2.1.1-EK-2021-00005)
Project ID: 2021-2.1.1-EK-2021-00005
Project description:
In 2017, a 20 MW high-power photovoltaic power plant was built on the reclaimed area of an abandoned open-cast mine in Bükkábrány. In the area of the power plant, the owner is planning further energy expansions in line with the objectives of the national energy and hydrogen strategy. A hydrogen production plant is already under construction in the area, which is capable of producing green hydrogen using solar power generation. In order to contribute to system stability additional energy investments have been decided. The objective of the project is the installation of an energy storage operating with NaS (sodium-sulphur) technology with a nominal capacity of 1 MW and a storage capacity of 6 MWh, and thus the establishment of the Bükkábrány Energy Park. The project also carried out R&D activities with close university cooperation. The aim is to investigating the safe operation of different storages and P2G technologies side by side, their economic optimisation, and monitoring and researching changes in the storage equipment during its operation.
Future investments in the area of the Energy Park:
The project will involve the installation of 5 NaS storage units in a closed container, each with a nominal capacity of 200 kW and a storage capacity of 1200 kWh. The containers contain the auxiliary equipment, the protections and the sensors necessary for the operation of the storage equipment. The connection of the storage units will be established from an existing 35 kV station’s back-up branching cell from the internal network of the Energy Park. The 35 kV cable will be lay down approximately on a 150 m trail, which is connected to a 35 kV concrete enclosure transformer station on the side above the storage. During the project weather stations will be installed which are capable of detecting and transmitting current weather parameters. The stations also include solar irradiance sensors and sky cameras.
